Merryvale Starmont Cabernet Review

StarmontLast night we pulled a bottle of the 2007 Merryvale Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon to drink with our Seared Ahi Tuna (for Chuck) and Veal Madeira (for Deb). I gotta say, we were impressed. It’s easy to write a glowing review of this wine, because it’s so easy to enjoy. (And it’s not just me: it gets good ratings from the wine press year after year).

Merryvales’s Starmont is actually a state-of-the-art project. They’re leading the way in sustainable wine-making, which seeks to be environmentally friendly in grape-growing, winemaking, energy and water conservation, and more.

But back to our wine-drinking experience. The nose led with dark berry fruit and toasty oak. After another good swirl and sniff, my first sip gave me a burst of bright fruit that softened to vanilla on the backside. The balance was good, with enough acid to allow the Cab to marry well with the food (it’s not easy to pair well with both rare tuna and a richly-sauced veal).

The finish had enough grip to show that I was drinking Cabernet, but with enough softness to make the wine enjoyable right now: perfect for those of us who appreciate Instant Gratification!

One word sums up this wine: elegant. It’s not the right choice if want a monstrous, hit-you-upside-the-head wine. But for a good-value, quality dinner Cabernet, it’s just the ticket.
